SOUTH KENT SPORTSMAN'S CLUB       NEWS LETTER    JULY/AUG 2008

MEMBERSHIP MEETINGS: The next membership meeting will be Monday, August 11th at 8 PM in the club house.  September’s meeting will be Monday the 8th.  There will be two 50/50 drawings and the meeting attendance drawing for $435 or more.  You must be present to win.  The board meets prior to the membership meeting.

 RANGES RULES AND PRACTICES:

The board would like to remind all members that they need to periodically review and follow range rules and practices.  The most important rules are posted on each range and can be check instantly by looking at the signs.  However, we also need to remember and follow the general rules covered in the safety video.  Examples are: the closure of the side range gates when it is appropriate, using proper target materials, cleaning up brass and target materials, sharing the range with others, using good range etiquette, obeying shooting hours, checking for scheduled events before getting to the range, using only lead center fire pistol ammunition on the plate targets, shooting only from approved and designated firing lines, etc.  Follow this simple rule:  If you don’t know, or have a doubt; then don’t, but ask or read to learn what is right.  Enjoy your club!   Bring a friend, or teach someone new to shoot and enjoy your sport even more.

ANNUAL SKSC CLUB PICNIC JULY 27:  Remember to set aside Sunday July 27th for the SKSC club picnic.  We’ll start eating at 12:30 PM and continue until we’re all full or stuff is gone.  Shooting activities begin at 10 AM.  The club furnishes lemon aide, tea, or coffee to drink and the meat.  You need to bring a dish to pass and your table service.  There will be shooting activities after dinner and lots of door prizes.  Bring the whole family for a wonderful day together at the club.  You may use all the ranges but you need to obey all the normal club rules.

WORK DAYS:  Meet at the club house.  Work hours are from 10AM to 1 PM.  Remember that selected ranges will be closed during work periods.  July’s work day will be devoted to preparations for the club picnic on Sunday.  We’ll be cleaning the club house and the grounds.  Other work days will be: July 26, August 23, and September 27.  Remember, you get $10 credit for each hour you work up to 4 hours.

DISTRICT V SHOOTS: The MUCC District V shoot will be held at Gun River.  If you would like to represent SKSC, please signup in the club house.  The trap and skeet shoot will be held at Gun River on July 19 & 20th.  Look for signup sheets in the club house.  The club pays for half the entry fee.  We’d like a good turnout to help represent SKSC.  You may shoot trap, skeet or both.  Each event consists of 50 targets.

BEAT THE STOCK MARKET; INVEST IN YOUR CLUB:  Now that we have completed the purchase of the 40 acres to the West of the club house, we need to pay for it.  You can help and earn money doing so by purchasing a promissory note.  These notes are for any even amount over $5000, pay 6% annual interest, and are for 10 years.  Contact Dave Smith if you are interested and want to invest.  Better than a CD.  Can’t invest?  Then donate.

LAND PURCHASE DONOR’S HONOR ROLL: Persons who donate a total of $100 or more to the new land purchase fund will have their engraved name plates placed on an honor roll plaque which is on display in the clubhouse.  Any amount is gratefully accepted.  Your donations will be accumulated and when it equals $100, your name will be added to the honor roll.  Help SKSC grow by being a donor.

THERE’LL BE A HOT TIME THIS WINTER:   Come on and get that free winter fire wood now.  We really do need to get those trees removed so we can begin mining the lead.  You may cut between the hours of 9 and sunset.  You can cut anytime trap and skeet are not open for public use.  Please do not cut trees with ribbons or red X’s on them.  In general, trees 12 inches in diameter and smaller may be cut.  Cut only trees that are in the marked area to the East of the trap and Skeet fields.  This is generally 100 feet into the woods beginning at the North end of the trap fields and South to skeet 2’s fence line.  The bigger trees will be logged by a mill.  PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE STUMPS.  CUT AS CLOSE TO THE GROUND AS POSSIBLE.

CPL CLASSES AT SKSC: Concealed Pistol Classes will resume at SKSC.  The instructor is Terry Thompson.  Cost will be $75 for members and $125 for non-members.  There is a $25 non-refundable deposit.  Contact Terry at 616 891 4118, 616 293 8245, or via email at ccwtraining@AOL.com.
