Training

SKSC offers the following types of training. Click on a category for further details.

SKSC is coordinating with the non-profit, Project Appleseed, for Project Appleseed to offer their beginner rifle class at a 25 meter range throughout the year. This class is an apolitical rifle marksmanship Instruction program that focuses on teaching traditional rifle marksmanship from standing, sitting/kneeling, and prone positions over a two-day weekend shooting clinic. Youths (under 18) are welcome with an adult.
Additional Instructions and special event Instructions, like youth group only or 22 only Instructions can be accommodated if enough interest is shown, please contact MI@appleseedinfo.org for more information.

Instruction will focus on:

  1. Safe gun handling.

  2. How the Revolutionary War started and was won. (Spoiler alert: grit, determination and superior marksmanship).

  3. Proper use of a rifle sling (USGI Sling).

  4. Standing, sitting/kneeling, and prone positions.

  5. Natural Point Of Aim (NPOA).

  6. Saturday is a 25M with option to shoot Known Distance on Sunday.

Cost: $20-$60 (prices subject to change, please see link below for current prices)
Class participants will need to bring their own firearm (Centerfire or 22 Rimfire), USGI Sling, shooting mat, ammunition, food, drink, ear protection, and eye protection. See sign-up link below for a full list of suggested and required items. If needed, there maybe an option to borrow a rifle, please contact registrations@projectappleseed.net if needed.

These classes are open to members and non-members, who are U.S. Citizens or a Permanent Resident Aliens.

SKSC is coordinating with the non-profit, Project Appleseed, for Project Appleseed to offer their advanced rifle class on the 500 yard range. This class is an apolitical rifle marksmanship Instruction program that focuses on teaching traditional rifle marksmanship from standing, sitting/kneeling, and prone positions over a two-day weekend shooting clinic. This is a “KD” (Known Distance) event, enable a rifleman to be accurate out to 400 yards with iron sights, using standard rifles. Instruction will be conducted on the firing range at multiple distances, including ranges of 100-200-300-400 yards. Youths (under 18) are welcome with an adult. You must have been through a Project Appleseed Instruction to take this class. This Instruction is planned throughout the year.

Instruction will focus on:

  1. Skills from the Rifleman Fundamental Skills Instruction (You must have been through a Project Appleseed Instruction to take this class).

  2. Target identification.

  3. Range estimation.

  4. Shot trajectory (ballistics).

  5. Adjusting sights/optics for various ranges.

SKSC is now offering firearms classes for handgun, rifle and shotgun. These are basic classes for the beginner shooter that emphasize safety and the working knowledge of firearms, plus range instruction.  No prior shooting experience is required.  The classes are also appropriate for the experienced shooter who wishes to improve their skills. Class participants will need to bring their own firearm and ammunition as well as ear and eye protection.

These classes are open to members and non members.

THIS IS NOT CPL TRAINING.

SKSC is offering a basic ballistics class for rifles that will allow the rifle shooter to safely use any range at SKSC.

The class will be three hours long, normally on a Saturday morning. The classroom session will cover:

  1. Safety

  2. External ballistics and what to expect with your rifle.

  3. Some rifles are not made for longer distances, but the topics will pertain to all rifles.

After the classroom session, the students will learn to sight-in their rifles at a close distance with instruction on how to safely move on to longer distances. We will use the Multi Purpose bunkers or the 35 yard bunker for this part of the class.

These classes are open to both members and non-SKSC members.

Concealed Pistol License (CPL) & Advanced CPL training (A-CPL) is taught by Tyburn Tactical. https://www.tyburntactical.com/

CPL training fee: $90 for club members and $125 for non-members.

 
Advanced CPL training is: $215 for club members and $250 for non-members. There is a non-refundable $50 deposit required five days prior to either class.

The CPL class meets the Michigan Concealed Pistol License Requirements and complies with Section 5j of 1927 PA372 of the Michigan Firearms Code.

Typically, class is scheduled for the 3rd Saturday of the month.

SKSC hosts the area's best DNR Hunter Safety Class.  For more information or to sign up, please call:

Jim and his loyal staff volunteer their time and efforts to bring this highly acclaimed safety class to the public, so thank them when you see them.  This is a great class for everyone over the age of 10 to learn about general firearms safety, even if you are not a hunter.  The class is free, but donations to cover course and training materials are gladly accepted.  Classes are held Wednesday 6:00pm - 9:00pm and Saturday 8:am - 4:00pm.  You MUST attend both the Wednesday and Saturday classes.  Bring a sack lunch on Saturday.
